Guests were treated to a special show at the Moon Family Theatre in Buena Vista recently, as the multi-Dove Award winning and Grammy nominated trio The Martins – siblings Judy, Jonathan, and Joyce Martin – performed.
The accomplished group has risen to national and international success and has performed in many placed across the national, including The Grand Ole Opry and The White House. However, they also have a very local connection and they were thrilled with the opportunity to play Moon Family Theatre.
"Buena Vista is near and dear to my heart," said Judy Martin Hess, one of the three siblings in the group. "It was my home and it played a major role in my kids' lives. I'm excited to come back and see the people there who are still just pouring themselves into the community."
While living here, she came to know Lynn Moon McAllister, founder of Moon Family Theatre and the Performance Academy. McAllister had formed the academy originally as an extra-curricular program for MCHS when the Hess Family was living here.
"All of our kids went to Lynn's Performance Academy," said Judy. "I've kept in touch with her and I was extremely excited when she reformed the academy and opened Moon Family Theatre. … I remember when she first started, I remember how important it was for the kids and how she has such a talent for teaching young people, helping them understand their abilities and use them and gain confidence. I saw the camaraderie among the students and their focus and energy in the productions. It was huge for me as a parent."
One of her children, Jake Hess, III, opened the recent show and also was well-received by the audience. That was no surprise, as many area residents recall that the talented young man was a part of Marion County High School's State Championship Quartet in 2013 (along with Jordan Moses, Skyler McAllister, and Luke McMurry).
One of the attendees at the recent show, Marlene Stehman, said, "What a tremendous evening of gospel music and witness. Also, loved the music and faith witness by next generation Jake Hess. No better place to be on a Saturday night. Thank you for bringing awesome family entertainment to Buena Vista."
Up next at Moon Family Theatre is "Getting in the Mood for Christmas" featuring the Performance Academy, this Saturday, November 27 (two shows – 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.). Tickets are $25. For more info dial 229-649-2028.
