Local farmer drowns in pond

From the March 15, 2017 issue of The Journal
By Linda Adams
Schley County resident Larry Raybon loved to fish and was checking his nets in a pond when he fell overboard and drowned. The search for his body took place all day Friday, March 10 with local divers from Schley, Sumter and Lee Counties in Georgia and Russell County in Alabama trying to find the body.
The Department of Natural Resources brought their sonar equipment to look underwater. The teams worked all day Friday with no success.
A team brought their cadaver dog on Saturday morning to help pinpoint the location and only then were the divers successful. The dog rode in a boat crisscrossing the pond until he detected gases rising out of the water.
Mr. Raybon had just turned 70-years-old in January of this year. His services will be held at Watson Giddens Funeral Home in Ellaville. See the full obituary on Page 3 of this week's newspaper.
