Local VITA Office is offering
FREE tax prep assistance

   Many area residents are looking forward to the coming spring season, but unfortunately no matter how the nice the weather gets, we must also deal with the fact that it is tax season. The deadline to file federal income tax returns is April 18.
   One thing that makes it easier for area residents is the presence of the Marion County VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program in Buena Vista. In most cases, the service offers free tax preparation for those with family incomes of $54,000 or less, which means that the majority of local families are eligible.
   The local VITA program was in danger of disappearing this year, as in the past it was funded through a grant from the IRS, but that is no longer the case. However, several groups stepped forward to keep the local office open.
   The Marion County Commission is contributing $3,000, while Ameris Bank made a donation of $100 and the Peoples Bank of Georgia has donated $150 in office supplies. The City of Buena Vista continues to help by providing office space.
   "We are very appreciative of the donations, which are helping us be able to continue to help our residents," said Site Coordinator Marie Shearer Berlanga.
