   The forecast for thunderstorms gave way to a beautiful day last Saturday for the participants who turned out to compete in the 2nd Annual Can You Cross Country? 5K & Fun Run at Marion County Middle-High School, which was a fundraiser hosted by the Cross Country Booster Club.
   "I want to thank our Booster Club, the sponsors, and everyone who came out to enjoy the day with us and support the Cross Country

teams at our annual event," said Coach Michelle Harris. "I hope everyone enjoyed the day and we look forward to seeing you again."
   The event began at 9 a.m. with the One-Mile Fun Run, which was followed by an awards ceremony. The top three boys and girls earned medals. George Daniel Dixon, 11, was the fastest runner for the second year in a row (7:12) and received the first place boys' medal. Brock Stubbs, 9, was second with a time of 7:24, while Ty Goodroe, 8, placed third at 7:27.
   For the girls, the award winners were: 1st Place – Sophie Brazier (6) 8:21; 2nd Place - Enyse Mulkey (12) 8:45; and 3rd Place – Clara Fuller (10) 9:21.
   The 5K, which was run on the challenging cross country course that winds around the campus and includes plenty of hills, twists, and turns, began at 10:30 a.m.
   Overall Winners: The fastest finisher of the day was MCHS cross country runner Nathan Moon, who reached the finish line well ahead of all other runners with a time of 20:02. He received a trophy as the Overall Male Winner. The trophy of Overall Female Winner went to Taylor Mattson, who finished in 28:35.
Age Division Awards
   19 & Under Male: 1st – Caleb Minard; 2nd – Zeb Denney; 3rd – Drew Harris.
   19 & Under Female: 1st – Ashley Whitley; 2nd – Shelby Brazier; 3rd – Leila Brown.
   30-39 Male: 1st – Jonathan Murray; 2nd – Dean Bozeman.
   30-39 Female: 1st – Edna Keller; 2nd – Kelli Harris; 3rd – Shelli Bozeman.
   40-49 Male: 1st – Genaro Garcia (who also was 2nd place overall with a time of 21:20).
   40-49 Female: 1st – Christi Horsting; 2nd – Julie Brazier; 3rd – Lynn Denney.
   50-59 Male: 1st – Jeff Gordy; 2nd – Steve White; 3rd – The event's most mysterious runner who would only reveal his nickname of "The Big Heat".
   50-59 Female: 1st – Michi Dunmon; 2nd – Rani Garner; 3rd – Lisa Harbuck.
   Master's: 1st – Dan McGowan; 2nd – Paul Davis; 3rd – Bill McGowan.
   Once across the finish line, runners were provided with free snacks donated by Snider's Lance and bottled water donated by Oakland IGA. Barbecue sandwiches, chips, and sodas were also available thanks to J&R Quickstop, which cooked on-site.
   Sponsors for the event were Annie D's Restaurant, Ameris Bank, Hometown Business Services, J&R Quickstop, J&L Pizzeria, The Journal, Steve White Sawmill & Lumber, Auction 41, Moon Rogers Motor Company, Partners Propane, Kick'n Chick'n, and Armageddon Gear.
   Door prizes included coupons from Road ID and Big Dog Running Company and T-shirts from The Journal.
