of The Journal

The Journal editor Richard Harris received the First Place Award for Education Writing at the Georgia Press Association's Annual Banquet, which was held recently at Jekyll Island. The award was in the Weekly F Division, which is the largest division and is comprised of all weekly newspapers in the state with a circulation of 3,000 or less.
The 2019 GPA awards were selected from newspapers published during 2018.
The judges commented on several stories, including: "State officials 'check out' Chatt. Co. High School", which reported on State Superintendent Richard Woods and others visiting the school and getting an update on the formation of the Chattahoochee Valley Academy, etc.; "Tidwell: Marion Co. High is No. 1 academically in RESA", which summarized a report from Superintendent Glenn Tidwell to the local Chamber of Commerce about various test scores and programs in the school system; and "Stewart Celebrates Opening of New Educational Complex", which was written about the grand opening of new buildings and how they are to be used.
The GPA judges' remarks included, "Richard's reporting highlighted his intense knowledge of the local school systems and the players involved. He did a good job explaining test scores and changes happening."
