Buena Vista VITA helps taxpayers
bring back $384,564

   The Marion County Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program recently wrapped up the 2017 tax season and Director Marie Berlanga has reported some impressive figures.
   The local VITA Office, which is located in the Josh Gibson Center in Buena Vista, processed 447 tax returns (213 federal, 234 state). All of these were free for the local residents who used the service.
   The returns resulted in a grand total of $384,564 in "returns" coming back to the tax filers. That breakdown was as follows: federal refunds of $340,521, state refunds of $44,043.
   In addition to "bringing home" $384,564, the local office received a perfect score (100% compliance) with zero issues from the Internal Revenue Service for the ninth year in a row.
   Local funding and volunteer workers make the service available at no charge for the local residents who quality. For the recent tax season, the service was free in most cases for those with a family income of $54,000 or less, meaning that a majority of local families qualified.
