Attorney tells Buena Vista City
Council to be Careful with Nepotism

   The Buena Vista City Council debated the issue of nepotism and whether or not the city officially has a policy against it, discussed an upcoming increase in water rates, voted to create several new positions, created a new system to recognize outstanding employees, passed an alcohol license for a local business, and discussed other issues during its meeting on February 1.
   Nepotism: There was a fairly lengthy discussion about nepotism, which is defined by the Oxford Dictionary as "the practice among those with power or influence of favoring relatives or friends, especially by giving them jobs." Council member Elizabeth Murray brought the subject up, apparently in reference to Mayor Brown's recommendation to hire a family member during a previous

meeting. There were not enough votes to pass the recommendation in the previous meeting, as there was a lack of a quorum, but Murray asked City Attorney Roger Montgomery to elaborate on nepotism for future reference.
