The Journal earns GPA Awards

From the August 1, 2018 issue of The Journal
The Journal was recently awarded two statewide awards by the Georgia Press Association, which announced its annual award winners during the recent Annual Convention. The awards were for content published during 2017.
The Journal was the first place winner in the weekly division (all sizes) in the category of "Best Online News Project". The winning project was the newspaper's online "Year in Photos" section, which is posted on the newspaper's Smugmug site (click here to view). The judges said it was a "great way to tell stories through cutlines and photos, especially as a year-in-review."
This was the second time in the last three years that The Journal earned the Best Online News Project Award. Two years ago it was received for the newspaper's video interview of the late Roosevelt Jackson, who at the time was the nation's oldest known former player/manager/scout of the Negro Baseball League. That online feature may be viewed here.
The Journal also received the third place award in the category of Business Writing. This was in the GPA's weekly Division F category, which includes all weekly newspapers with circulations of 3,000 or less. The stories noted for this award included:
   * Momentum in Marion: Chamber of Commerce is having an exciting year, from tourists to new local businesses (July 5, 2017 issue - see story).
   * Buena Vista gets high-scale coffee shop; Baristas to begin serving at Front Porch Inn & Coffee Club (July 12, 2018 issue - see story).
   * Swamp Fox Distilling Co. coming to Buena Vista; Bourbon from Buena Vista – Fox Hall to transition to artisanal small batch distillery, which will manufacture three types of whiskey, offer tours, and have 'tastings ' (Dec. 13, 2017 issue - see story).
