   A pivotal moment of progress in the history of Marion County – and in the entire country – was forever etched in stone last Saturday, July 30, 2016 as members of the MCHS Class of 1971 gathered on the Courthouse Lawn in Buena Vista to unveil a new monument.
   The monument pays tribute to the members of the Class of 71 as the first local integrated class after the federal mandate to end school segregation. It lists all 88 class members, as well as Superintendent L. King Moss, Principal George McGlaun, and senior advisors Pearl Garrett and Isaiah Terry.
   It may be hard for the current crop of local youngsters to fully appreciate the significance of the role played by the '71 graduates, but their joining together in the classroom was indeed historic and paved the way for all of the classes that have come after them.
