Webster County students help
area animal rescue organization

By RICHARD HARRIS
(From the December 20, 2006 issue)
The students at Webster County Elementary-Middle School showed their Christmas spirit in a unique way this year. Not only did they come through with a project to help their fellow residents in need (see separate article on Page 6B), but they even helped some four-legged residents of nearby Marion County by raising money for Claws & Paws.
Webster County’s fourth and fifth grade students voted to forgo their tradition of giving presents to each other and teachers in favor of supporting a worthy cause. They decided to lend a helping hand to some of God’s creatures who are the most helpless – homeless dogs and cats.
They did this by raising money and purchasing food, toys, bowls and treats for Claws & Paws, an area non-profit animal rescue organization based in Marion County.
The volunteers of Claws & Paws were so impressed with the actions of the students that they decided to visit the school to personally accept the gifts and to teach the students more about their mission. They took along five dogs and four kittens, allowing the youngsters to get a close up look at a few of the animals they were helping.
“We also talked to them about all of the responsibilities pet owners have, like making sure their pets have all of the needed vaccinations, as well as the importance of spaying and neutering so there won’t be so many uncared for animals,” said Peggy Woolam of Claws & Paws. “Of course, we also talked about how important it is to treat animals well, and that there aren’t really bad puppies or dogs, but sometimes bad people mistreat animals so they don’t grow up like they should.”
The students also told their own stories.
“They in turn told us stories about their animals,” said Woolam. “Some told us they had pets that they had rescued, too.”
One of Webster County’s teachers, Debra Patterson, took the project a step further by actually adopting one of the puppies. While she had been thinking about the possibility of getting a dog, she wasn’t planning on it yet. However, when she saw the

cute face of Mya, a 9-week-old Shepherd-Husky mix, the deal was sealed.
“Just look at his face,” she exclaimed. “This is my Christmas present to myself.”

Claws & Paws is very appreciative of the donations from the Webster County students. In addition to Woolam, other volunteers who participated in the program at WCE/MS were: Carol Herring, Pat Bailey, Donnita Waters and Elizabeth Maulden.
