The Town of Preston announces that it will be working with Animal Control Specialist Danny Singleton of Buena Vista to control stray dogs in the area. Singleton has worked with animal control for 11 years and is certified.
The Town Council asks local residents to review the ordinance that refers to stray dogs. Portions of the ordinance are listed below. For more information contact Preston City Hall at 229-828-2975.
Animal and Fowl - Running at large prohibited: It shall be unlawful for the owner, keeper or person having control of any wild or domestic animal or fowl to permit the same to run at large upon any street or public ground of the City or upon the property of any other person.
Impounding required: The police are required to seize and impound any wild or domestic animal or fowl found running at large in violation of the preceding section, and to authorize the safe keeping of the same for a determined amount of time or until it shall be redeemed by its owner, upon the payment of a pound fee for each animal so impounded, plus all costs of caring for and feeding the animal while so impounded.
Redemption or sale: In case said impounded animals or fowl shall not be redeemed within five days from the date of their seizure, the City’s agent shall cause the same to be sold as a stray or euthanized if the owner is unknown. But if the owner is known, and he shall fail to redeem such animals or fowl within five days after notice of their impoundment, he shall be deemed guilty of a violation of the City’s law and subject to the provisions of Section 1-8 of this Code.
Inoculation and tag required: It shall be unlawful for any person to keep, maintain or permit the keeping or maintaining on their premises or elsewhere within the corporate limits of the City any dog which has not been inoculated and tagged and the owner of any dog found within the corporate limits of the City which has not been tagged and inoculated as herein prescribed shall be guilty of a violation of this section.
All dogs within the corporate limits of the City shall be inoculated and tagged in the following manner: They shall be inoculated with a standard and effective anti-rabies serum or virus by a licensed and practicing veterinarian or physician.
Upon such dog being inoculated, the person so administering the inoculation shall issue his certificate to that effect and shall deliver to the owner of the dog a tag to be worn by such dog. Said tag shall be not less than one inch in diameter and shall be of metal and shall have impressed thereon the respective serial number and year, in which issued, and shall be so constructed as to permit its being hung securely around the neck of said dog. Said tag shall be worn by the dog around its neck at all times during the year for which the same is issued.
Inoculations shall be done prior to May of each year, and the inoculation shall be effective for a calendar year from May 1. |
