The new wing of Schley County High School was dedicated at 6 p.m. on Open House night, Tuesday, August 1, 2006.
Superintendent William Johnson said that he is often asked what made Schley County High School so good. His answer includes the focus on students, the care, concern and compassion of the teachers and staff, and the fact that the entire community supports the school.
Johnson said that the dedication was to honor the person who gave “the gift that keeps on giving.” He was referring to Robert Johnson Hill of Athens. A native of Schley County, Mr. Hill donated the proceeds from a sale of land in the amount of $500,000. This, along with state and local tax dollars, built the spacious new wing of Schley County High School.
“His only request was that the wing be named for his parents, Mervin Johnson Hill and Morris Crawford Hill,” Johnson said.
When asked to speak, Mr. Hill said that he was very happy for the school, that it was a wonderful school and had earned a good reputation. He added that the money for this wing was but half of his gift, and that upon his death, an equal amount will be given to the school.
Accompanying Bob Hill on his trip to the dedication ceremony was a friend who was responsible for prompting him to come, Charles Godfrey of Spartanburg, South Carolina, and Hill’s nephew, Chris Lewis with his wife Tina. Charline and Rob Hill of Ellaville also joined Hill at the dedication. |
