American Legion proudly flies
flags in downtown Ellaville

By LINDA ADAMS
(From the November 21, 2006 issue)
There are four times each year when members of Thomas Edwin Wall American Legion Post No. 191 put some 76 flag posts around the square in downtown Ellaville.  They were just

taken down after flying for Veterans Day. The other three times are Memorial Day on the 27th of May, Independence Day -- the fourth of July, and Flag Day on June 14th.
The flags each commemorate a soldier and were originally purchased by the families of the soldiers. Most commemorate fallen soldiers who gave their lives, but some are honoring soldiers who served and came home to live out their lives in the community. The names are placed on red plaques on the posts, and when they are set out, the name plaques are facing the sidewalks, so that the names can easily be read.
As the flags wear and need to be replaced, the Legion pays for the replacements. The poles are inserted into PVC holders

in the ground. A cap is placed over the holders when the poles are not on display.
“It is a lot of work, but to see the flags flying, and remember what they represent, makes it worth the effort,” said Vernon Dillard, sergeant at arms in charge of the project.
