| a sophomore, scoring a touchdown late in the quarter. Tony Lizarrage, another sophomore, nailed the extra point to make the score 7-0. The scoreboard was set back to “0-0” and the varsity teams took the field at the start of the second quarter, with the Wildcats assuming good field position from their JV. The next three quarters seemed to show that both teams are improved from a year ago – and both teams fought hard throughout. The only score in the varsity portion of the game was a field goal by Schley County’s Lizzaroga, which gave the Wildcats a 3-0 win in the defensive battle. “It was a really good game,” said Schley County Head Coach Jim McFather. “I think both teams are better and Marion has some big guys this year. We were very fortunate to get a field goal and be on the winning side.” “Schley County played well and I also felt like we ran out of |

| time,” said Marion County Head Coach Calvin Aldridge, who is in his first season with the Eagles. “Our varsity offense only had the ball four times. Schley County held on to the ball and kept their offense on the field longer than we did. We also had some key penalties against us.” Both coaches saw positives and negatives as they evaluated their own players during the scrimmage, and they are hard at work this week to make corrections before their big season-openers this Friday, Sept. 1 at 7:30 p.m. (Marion County will host Chattahoochee County, while Schley County will host Glasscock County). “In the first quarter our JV didn’t do too well offensively, but they will start to play better,” said MCHS Coach Aldridge. “Our varsity defense did a pretty good job (including four quarterback sacks). Robert McKenzie (junior) had a great game at defensive tackle and kept pressure on their quarterback. Our linebackers need to work on reading keys, but I think we’ll be okay defensively. Offensively, Kendrick Reeves (sophomore running back) had a good football game, and Tramayne (Wilson) was 4-for-7 passing and the only interception he threw was due to the receiver making a mistake running a route. Several guys on our offensive line played well, too.” For Schley County, Coach McFather said his Wildcats played well as a unit on defense, but he was a little disappointed in the team’s offensive production. “We had too many miscues on offense – mostly blocking assignments – but the Marion County defense was tough, too,” he said. Coach McFather said other positives were the fact that the team didn’t suffer any serious injuries and the crowd support on both sides of the field was good. He also liked the way his players kept battling till the end in a close game – something he says has been missing at times in the past. Marion’s Coach Aldridge was pleased overall with the effort made by his team, too, noting that they have a very young squad (only four seniors) and a lot of the players are getting their first taste of high school football. “We will get better as we go and we’re hoping for a great game with a great crowd this Friday when we open the season against Chattahoochee County,” he said. Eagle fans should also make a note that there has been a change in the schedule and the following week’s game (Friday, Sept. 8 against Central-Talbotton) will be played at Marion County High School instead of in Talbotton. |
