Marion County Commissioner
gives his thoughts on several issues

Marion County Commissioner Frank Powell recently shared his thoughts on several issues with the newspaper. His comments are below.
"While campaigning for commissioner in 2004, I listened to what the voters had to say about the most important issues facing Marion County. By far the two most important issues were filthy dump sites and roads. Within the past 22 months I have traveled every road in Marion County (at my personal expense) to try to get some feel for the garbage situation and road needs.
Georgia Environmental Protection Division
"Harry Winters and I went to Atlanta in 2005, sat down and talked to EPD about the Solid Waste Landfill and the problems the county was having. At the meeting with EPD we did not get all we asked for, but we got a good understanding of what the county had to do to correct the problem. In 2006, Marion County got a Methane Remediation Plan approved and the contract was signed to install Turbine Vents in hopes of correcting the problem."

Georgia Department of Transportation
"Commissioner Hays and I made a trip to Atlanta DOT, met with DOT Commissioner Harold Linnenkohl to discuss road needs in Marion County. This trip proved very rewarding in that we got approval on each project we discussed. Mr. Linnenkohl agreed to:
(1). Resurface Dr. Brooks road at no cost to Marion County. This has been completed.
(2). Approve contract to pave Young-Cannon road. This project is being done at this time.
(3). Agreed to send State Crane to fix: (A) Bill Merritt Road bridge - completed. (B) Dan Wells Road bridge - completed."
    Curb Side Pick-up of Garbage
"The main reason for curb side pick-up was to get rid of filthy, unsightly dump sites. I would like to mention a few simple reasons for removal.
(1). If you drove up to a dump site and threw trash in, like I did many times, and it contained other than household garbage, you and I both broke the law and we deserve to accept a little responsibility for dumpsters being moved.
(2). If you are a basketball type person, drove up, threw your garbage at the dumpster, missed and did not rebound, you deserve to accept a lot of responsibility for dumpsters being gone.
(3). If you were a big time garbage person and threw a truck transmission, railroad cross ties, car tires (51 at one time) you should accept a lot of responsibility for dumpsters being gone.
Marion County is in the fourth week of curb side service. The commissioners realize we have had some problems daily. The ladies

in the commissioners office, even with verbal abuse, have done a good job of correcting any problems. The Sheriff's Department has done a good job of helping control litter. The question has been asked how the money for garbage service is being handled and the answer is, that the money is being deposited in a separate checking account. As soon as the movement of carts settles down the commissioners will have an audit of carts (cart count). I know we have some people who are trying to sabotage curb side pick-up and my answer to them is wake up and smell the roses. Curbside service is working."
Commissioners Meeting
"The commissioners' meetings are held on the second Tuesday each month at 4 p.m. I do not see any need to change the meeting time for if we did change the time within 6-8 months, somebody would want to change again.
In our meetings lately, we have had people read a canned presentation, pause, and let the people clap their hands and shout. In the last commissioners' meeting a man shouted praises to Hitler. I consider the above conduct at a commissioners' meeting uncalled for and unacceptable."
